PML designed this transmission pan for 1981 to 2014 2WD & 4WD Ford trucks and SUVs with automatic overdrive 4 speed transmissions. This pan features extra capacity, cooling fins and strong cast aluminum construction.

The first version of this transmission (the AOD) have one bolt hole in a slightly different location than the 1992/93 and later versions (AODE, 4R70, 4R70W, 4R70E, 4R75E, 4R75W). Be sure to select the correct one when you order.

Applications

Cars, such as Mustang and Thunderbird and Lincoln Mark VII, may need PML's stock capacity pan because many cars do enough ground clearance for a deep pan.

Lincoln Town Cars and limos based on the Town Car have installed this pan. Work vehicles like limousines appreciate the easier maintenance and extra capacity for cooling to extend the transmission life.

Trucks and SUVs, such as F150, Expedition, and Mountaineer, offer more clearance and can benefit from the extra fluid to aid in reducing fluid temperatures.

1992 to 1993 F150 trucks generally have the AOD transmission.

1994 to 2010 F150 trucks, Expeditions and Explorers with the Ford 4 speed transmission generally have an AODE, 4R70, 4R75 transmission.

There are many configurations so please check your vehicle to verify transmission and clearance.

Installation Note: On some vehicles, the transmission cross member and mount must be temporarily removed so that you can drop the stock pan and install the PML pan. After installing the PML pan, be sure to reassemble. Thanks to Rick who provided this tip after installing this pan on his 2002 F–150 with the 4R70W transmission.

Shift Lever Note: A customer with a 1967 Ford F-250 TCI AODE transmission noticed that thickness of the PML pan did not allow the shift lever full range of motion. He took the lip back about a 1/4 inch across a 1.5 inch line to get full range of the shift lever.

Filter and Gasket

PML recommends an aftermarket gasket (rubber, cork or similar) designed to work with the stock pan.

AODE, 4R70 transmission filters

Filter requirements for these Ford transmission pans:

  • AOD – 4WD (Deep) AOD filter is recommended.
  • AODE, 4R70, 4R75 – 4WD (Deep) AODE/4R70/4R75 filters are recommended.

Deep filters have metal pick-up tube.

Information for reference only. Installer should verify appropriate transmission and filter and fitment based on the individual vehicle.

The three round posts in the bottom of the pan are supports for the filter. These are cast into the pan. PML designed this pan with the filter supports to hold the the 4WD filter in place.

2005 Ford Crown Victoria

Leland installed this PML transmission pan on his 2005 Crown Vic Police Interceptor with a 4.6L V8. He had PML drill and tap the hole for the temperature sending unit. We were happy to hear that Leland found that "everything is top notch".

2002 F150 (4R70 Transmission)

Kazuya installed this PML transmission pan, part number 9685-2, on his 2002 F150 truck (in Tokyo, Japan!). Kazuya's truck has a 4R70 transmission, so he ordered PML part number 9685-2.

What is the difference between AOD and AODE, 4R70, 4R75 Transmissions?

The transmission pan bolt pattern for the AOD is slightly different than that of the AODE, 4R70, 4R75. It is important that you identify which transmission you have so that the pan you order will have the correct bolt pattern.

The AOD transmission was used in many rear wheel drive Ford vehicles from late 1981 through early 1993. The AODE transmission was produced for model years 1993 and 1994. Production of the 4R70 also began in 1993 and by 1995 it replaced the AODE. The 4R75 designation began in 2003.

AODE, 4R70, and 4R75 transmissions have a large electrical connector on the passenger side of the transmission just above the transmission pan. They also have a neutral safety switch mounted on the selector shaft on the outside of the transmission case on the driver’s side just above the transmission pan.

AOD transmissions have an internal neutral safety switch. A cable connects the throttle body to the transmission to downshift the transmission on full throttle acceleration. The AODE, 4R70, 4R75 do this electronically.

Remember: When you order, you must select AOD or AODE, 4R70, 4R75 in the shopping cart to get the correct bolt pattern on your pan.

Filters for PML AOD, AODE, 4R70, 4R75 Transmission Pans

PML makes deep and low profile transmission pans for Ford AOD, AODE, 4R70, and 4R75 transmissions. You must get the correct filter for the pan you order.

For the low profile pan:

AOD – must use 2WD AOD filter. 4WD filter will not fit.

AODE, 4R70, 4R75 – must use 2WD AODE filter. 4WD AODE and all 4R70 filters will not fit.

For the deep pan:

AOD – 4WD (Deep) AOD filter is recommended.

AODE, 4R70, 4R75 – 4WD (Deep) AODE or 4R70/4R75 filters are recommended.
